I had high hopes the last time that I restarted this blog that I'd be able to keep up with it. Unfortunately life and extraordinary amounts of overtime have killed any desire I've had to actual make coherent posts and I'd feel bad posting the normal stream of consciousness drek that seems to pour out of my keyboard when I don't have the wherewithal to do up something more structured.

However I've got a week off of work coming up for the holidays and I'm going to try and write up some blog posts. Between plans for a few games to run, stuff for Myganos, some podcast and product reviews I'd like to do, and the fortnightly D&D 5e game I'm part of I'm planning on at least attempting to build up something of a buffer for myself. Hopefully that'll work and I'll be able to stay ahead of the curve as far as posts are concerned.

That being said in order to build up a buffer I'm going to have to go intentionally radio silent for awhile. Don't expect anything out of me until mid January at the earliest, more likely February.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-51619705709491945822017-11-15T11:00:00.000-05:002017-11-15T11:00:33.799-05:00Games I'm Working OnAn overview of all the games I'm currently working on.

~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~
The first, and probably the biggest, project I'm working on currently is Myganos. It's my main homebrew world that I've been working on in fits and starts and in various forms since high school. A lot has changed in it since then though at this point I think it's basically settled into it's final form. It still needs a lot of detail work though the big strokes for the main play area have been figured out for the most part. Currently the plan is to just make the setting and mostly worry about rules after I get the setting parts figured out. Since this isn't always possible for various reasons (mostly stuff like magic that are very rule dependent) I have settled on running it with GURPS so I can help describe bits of the world better. The plan is to run it using base GURPS that I've heavily borrowed from the Dungeon Fantasy RPG to help simplify. If nothing else the Exploits book is a good resource for the normal kind of things that a D&D style group of adventurers get up to rather then combing through the core set and various Pyramid magazines.
The biggest thing here is going to be buckling down and detailing the play area including a map and the various factions that exist within it. Writing up a brief world overview document is going to difficult as well since I know I tend to ramble and if I want people to actually read this thing I'm going to need to pare it down to essential information. I can always give out more stuff if they get interested in it.
Myaganos also exists as a D&D setting though not everything comes across as well if I run it that way. I think it works best as a setting for Adventurer, Conqueror, King System because the differences between the playable races are a bit more pronounced than in a normal D&D setting and the different racial classes help to emphasize that within the core rules.
~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~

Next I'm working on a Shadowrun game set in Denver rather than the default of Seattle. Honestly I'm not sure why I'm making life more difficult for myself by choosing a city other then one of the ones they've spent a lot of ink and paper detailing but I really like how central Denver is to the rest of North America and the interactions between the various signatories of the Treaty of Denver, the Great Dragon Ghostdancer, the Free Spirits that have set up shop there due to his influence, and the various mega-corps make me happy. This'll be set in the same continuity of the last game I ran with the events of that game pushed back a year or so and the new game set almost a year after that and the trouble it stirred up. I still have two of the same people playing so I'll let them play the same PCs if they want to, it'll save me from having to come up with new plotlines for them. :-p

Most of the work here is going to be getting a decent map of the city together that is both detailed enough for both me and the players to use but vague enough so that neither I nor they end up dealing with information overload. I think there's an old City of Denver boxed set for 2nd edition Shadowrun which I should look into despite the fact that I'm going to be running 5th ed and that box is set before the arrival of Ghostdancer. It should at least provide me with some good info that I can use as a base, maybe even a map I can scan and alter to update it. After that I'll need to do at least basic write ups for various gangs and other groups that are in the city and quick overviews of what the various movers and shakers are up to.

~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~
The third game I'm working on is probably going to be a Traveller game set in some version of the default setting. Honestly this is the one that I've done the least amount of thinking on since it's the one that I expect to be voted for the least. I'm going to bill it as playing the game that Firefly was based on and while that would've gotten a lot of support from one of my former players he moved to Philly so that's not really a factor any more. I do know that I want to use the Mongoose version of the game and that the plan is to have the expanded options books (High Guard, Merchant Prince, and the like) other then that I'm not sure. I know I'm planning on doing the "default play style" where the PCs are folks living on the edges of society working to keep their boat afloat beyond that I'm really not sure. I know there's a few different versions of the setting that I need to read up on and that for the most part the default setting is the Spinward Marches but other then that I need to do more reading.
~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~

The last thing I'm working on as a personal project that'll show up here periodically is converting the original setting of Warhammer Fantasy into the RuneQuest 6/Mythras system. It's something I tried to do on the fly years ago and it frankly didn't work. I got some of it to work okay and as long as I wasn't trying to force two different magic systems to work together everything went alright but the game fell apart since I didn't actually have the requisite system knowledge for either system to make it work right.

I still like the idea of running in the Warhammer Fantasy Old World and I still think using RQ6/Mythras to do it is the best option but...well I think I need to actually spend more time converting stuff from the first setting into the other system to make it work. We'll see how this ends up going since to do it I'd like to get the updated Mythras version of the core rules since I've got the older RQ6 version and while they're supposed to be compatible I'd like to work out of the core book that I know my players can buy a copy of if they decide they want to. (Especially since I think they included errata into the newest printings.)

~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~ ~~~~~*~~~~~
So there's that. Hopefully I can limit myself to doing these things and keep on point for it rather then harrying off to tilt at other gaming windmills. That's the plan anyway.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-52203152753740417782017-11-13T16:42:00.000-05:002017-11-13T16:42:27.872-05:00A State of the Blog ThingA lot's changed since the last time I wrote in here.
For one thing that game I was talking about never happened. Stuff kept coming up for everyone involved so it just kept getting postponed until finally I just accepted that we weren't going to play.
So I began retooling it as a free-for-all hexcrawl kind of thing. I was going to pull from the West Marches games and other internet famous hexcrawl and mega dungeon games. The plan was to get it to a playable state and then run it using the new Dungeon Fantasy RPG recently released by Steve Jackson games at my FLGS. It's powered by GURPS and I think it would've been a nice change from the D&D and Pathfinder games that were getting run there. Unfortunately the company that owns the building they operated out of decided to jack their rent up which, when combined with a slow holiday season last year, means that they had to close their doors at the beginning of this past September. RIP The Enchanted Badger, the best damn gaming store that this town's seen in the years that I've been part of the gaming community.
Now I'm back to writing it up to play with a smaller and more consistent pool of players, hopefully with some guest players periodically. I'm back to planning it out in GURPS as well since I'm currently playing in a D&D 5e game run by one of the other members of my group. It's her first time DMing a game (or maybe her second?) and the first time most of us have actually played 5e so things can be...rough sometimes but it's fun. I kinda wish there was a bit more RP at times but to be fair we're all pretty rusty and this is a fairly straight forward dungeon crawl so whatever.
I'm going to try and properly resurrect this blog as well. Right now the plan is to do play reports for the game I'm playing in that'll post every other Monday, since we play every other Saturday. On Wednesdays or Thursdays I'm going to do some game design stuff, mostly geared towards the fantasy game I'm planning on running, though it might be for other games too since I've got system ADD pretty bad and I'm hoping that this'll be a good way to help curb it so I can stay focused.
So that's the plan, hopefully I can maintain output consistently enough that I'll feel comfortable enough to push myself to expand the audience for this thing. Maybe even submit it to the GURPSday Thursday thing that Douglas H Cole does on Gaming Ballistic.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-12178077197657895772017-05-17T10:00:00.000-04:002017-05-17T10:00:29.092-04:00Choosing a Game System and You, or More Accurately, My One Sided Conversation with Myself to Try and Figure Out What to RunLike I mentioned last time I will hopefully be running a game gain sometime in the near future, and that while I'd like run GURPS running something we all know the basics of pretty well might be a better idea. This leaves either World of Darkness or some variation on D&D as games either everyone already basically knows or I know well enough that I can teach them without breaking a sweat. I settled on some variation of D&D, mostly because I could then perhaps get my players to do a switch over to GURPS at a later date with the same characters but rebuilt for the different system.
The next step was the figure out which variant of D&D to use. The game has spawned countless revisions, hacks, clones, and imitators and I own more then a few, not to mention all the ones available online for free or right next to it. After talking to a couple of the potential players (one of them a gaming gear head like me) I decided against going for d20/3rd/Pathfinder for this. There's just too much material out there for it and despite being able to run the game from heart after it being the go-to system for almost a decade of my gaming I decided that something a little more self contained was the order of the day. I also decided I wanted to run something I owned a dead tree edition of since generally I dislike electronics at the gaming table if it can be avoided so something I can only get as a pdf where the legality of printing the dang thing out is iffy tends to get sidelined in my mind. So now I get to pick between the newest edition of D&D (which I'm pretty sure is officially 5th edition but honestly I'm not sure since the ocean adjacent magi had talked about getting rid of edition numbering for...reasons) and the estimable Adventurer, Conqueror, King System (here after known as ACKS) from Autarch.
When I'd originally thought about this I was leaning heavily to ACKS since I really like the system and it's low level lethality, and the fact that most of the classes (especially the racial ones) map up nicely to the kinds of things that exist in my homebrew world Myganos. However after going over both I think I'm leaning more towards using 5e. Sure the racial classes don't exist and I might have a minor rebellion on my hands when I say there are race/class restrictions but honestly stuff I was afraid of (mostly starting power level and equipment) doesn't seem to be as big a deal as I'd feared. Especially with the wealth of homebrew material out there, not to mention the Unearthed Arcana articles, it seems like I'll be able to tweak the game to suit my desires. It might not be the "core"
game I was thinking of when I headed down this path, or even when I started writing this blog post) but the fact that the books are being sold in out FLGS and I think at least one of the potential players already owns at least the PHB, 5e might be the way to go.
So there we go, assuming this game gets off the ground I'll be running 5th edition Dungeon & Dragons in my homebrew setting of Myganos. Next up is gathering resources to tweak the system as needed, and trying to keep my desire to tinker to a minimum. Also writing a bit of fluff for the races and classes to give the players ideas about how they fit in and function in the world.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-826086298582888802017-05-15T10:00:00.000-04:002017-05-15T10:00:32.167-04:00And we're back?Since it looks like I might be running a game again sometime in the near future I'm going to try and restart this blog as a public place to noodle on my world building, game designs and planning, and possibly start reviewing products I've got? We'll see about that last one, if it happens it'll be ridiculously infrequent or possibly just me babbling about mostly out of print games that I've collected over the years. I'll probably start posting about my LARPing as well since that looks like my wife and I are going to start that up again and this seems like as good a place as any to talk about it.
I know I failed hard at the "D&D Thirty Day Challenge". January was a rough patch that I won't go in to unless someone asks but suffice to say real life ate me and has only recently released me enough for me to have the extra mental and emotional bandwidth to even think I might be able to keep this up. I did end up with a new-to-me car out of the ordeal which is nice, and I'll probably start the Challenge again but I'm not sure when. Anyway, back to business-
Like I was saying, one of the couples is moving into a bigger place with a guy from the FLGS and they'll have a spare room so we will hopefully (fingers crossed) be starting up a new game again! *cue the triumphant music*
First some logistics to help me organize things in my head. The current plan is the do a month or two of weekly gaming on Saturday nights or possibly Friday nights. After that we're going to switch to aiming for two games a month since we've proven time and again that we can't keep a weekly game together for very long. Ideally this'll happen once a fortnight but there will be some flexibility built in so when the inevitable conflicts arise we'll be able to shift things and hopefully still get two games in that month.
That leaves what we're going to be playing. I honestly would like to just jump into a GURPS game because that's a system I've wanted to run for literal years and have never managed to get father than getting everyone's characters made. One of my potential players brought up the fact that none of us have gamed in the last year so it'd probably make more sense to run something we all know relatively well already though, ie some flavor of D&D or something World of Darkness. After some thought I think I'm going to go with D&D because I've been wanting to do some fairly straight forward fantasy gaming and my World of Darkness stuff always ends up being a slightly surrealistic horror show with ghosts, demons, Mythos inspired insanity, dream-prophecy, and kinda oddly placed bits of mundanity for the "simple to get us back in the swing of things" game we were talking about. [Also if I play my cards right I can "encourage" a conversion to GURPS at a later point....]
Tune in next time for me arguing with myself about if I should run Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition or Adventurer, Conqueror, King System; the pros and cons of both for what I want to do with the game, and the thrilling conclusion of my perhaps too open display of my particular brand of insanity!Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-60091109744791482422017-01-04T09:02:00.000-05:002017-01-04T09:02:46.402-05:00D&D Thirty Day Challenge! Day ThreeDay Three of this thirty day challenge and the topic of discussion is:
Day 3: Favorite PC Class
Like I said yesterday my favorite class ties into my favorite race for the most part, though with a night to think on it I'm a little less sure on what it actually is to be honest. My initial reaction was to say my favorite class is any kind of fighter-mage that's available. One of my first characters ever properly made from an actual rule book and not the half made up rememberings of my friend and first DM was an elven fighter-mage. Something about the image of being an accomplished warrior and a powerful wizard fired my imagination. I don't remember what level I ended up getting to with him, though it honestly couldn't have been that high. I do remember when I managed to learn lightning bolt though, that was a lot of fun. This love of the fighter-mage character concept is one of the things that spured me into looking into GURPS actually. The free form point buy system and the way the core Skill magic system works let me build a fighter-mage that was still a badass instead of mostly just being a half-assed fighter and a shitty caster.
Here's where my indecision comes in though. Because as much fun as I had playing elven fighter-mages in 2nd edition, duskblades in 3rd, and bards with one of the more martial archetypes in Pathfinder (I only ever played 4th for one short set of games and I was an eladrin wizard, and I haven't been able to play 5th yet) most of what I ended up playing were clerics of one stripe or another. Between the ability to wear heavy armor freely and their available weapons (especially if you played a cleric to a war god) they often made better fighter-mages than the classes built specifically around doing that.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-51881908750631560132017-01-04T00:25:00.001-05:002017-01-04T00:25:53.948-05:00D&D Thirty Day Challenge! Days 1 & 2Decided to do a writing challenge to try and get myself in the swing of actually posting regularly. To that end I tracked down something I've seen around the internet "The D&D Thirty-Day Challenge (Revised)!" Since there's only 30 prompts and 31 days in January I was holding off to start this the second but I missed it yesterday so I'll start it today instead. So, without further ado here are the first two days of this writing challenge.
Day 1: How You Got Started
I got my start in a slightly convoluted way compared to some other people that I know. I started off reading TSR "Endless Quest" books (It was the first one, Dungeon of Dread actually.) and reading a motley assortment assortment of 1st and 2nd edition books from the library, none of which I could tell the difference of since I had no frame of reference for anything other than the game these books described sounded amazing.
Then queue up fourth grade when a new kid in my school saw me reading one of these coveted library books and mentioned to me that he and some of his friends from where he'd moved from had played D&D a lot and did I play? A couple of bus rides later we figured out that we actually lived in the same trailer park and we were playing cobbled together games without dice or sheets or anything. It was entertaining and were soon making our character sheets and stealing dice from board games to play with while we made weird systems to approximate all the other types of dice from small piles of d6.
Day 2: Favorite PC Race
I had to think about this one for awhile but I think I finally settled on elf for my favorite race. The whole magic and fighting thing just appeals to me on a basic level and this choice ties into my choice of Favorite Class for tomorrow. The lengths that Tolkien went to when developing the ur-example of fantasy elvish languages really gets my inner geeky tinkerer as well.
So that's days 1 and 2 done. Tomorrow I'll post number 3 and hopefully this'll be something I can keep up for the rest of the month.
Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-40226682416751303252016-12-21T12:04:00.002-05:002016-12-21T12:04:35.105-05:00Goblin-Kin of MyganosIn Myganos goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs are all basically the same thing. The biggest difference between them is how they go about their day to day lives and where they tend to lair. For the most part what they get called is as much a regional thing as anything else. Technically these are specific classifications for distinct branches of the breed but the only people that really care about that are scholars that don't deal with them and the adventurers that get hired to hunt them down. Additionally ogres and bugbears are related to goblins but they're both special cases.
Goblins are creepy little spastic sadists. They have a thing for harming living creatures and tend to nest in deep dark forests, abandoned halfling burrows, mines, and caves. They don't form hordes/raiding parties very well, usually instead of it being a planned thing a group of goblins will start getting "friends" together and heading to a nearby village to hurt people and burn things and it'll build until it's a proper raiding party. Individually they have an innate sort of cunning, cobbling together tools, weapons, and armor out of scrap and scavenged goods; and being able to recognize valuable objects for decorations and sometimes trade if a shaman or chieftain that can organize them better has risen up from the rabble.
Orcs are basically bigger goblins that live above ground, generally in the mountains though migrations (both natural and forced) have scattered them pretty much everywhere on the face of Myganos that there aren't enough civilized beings to root them out.
Hobgoblins are the end result of an ancient sorcerer-king deciding that goblins would make pretty decent soldiers if only they'd work harder and got organized better. So now there are goblins that have soldiering burned into their very being. They stand up straighter then orcs or goblins, organize more readily, and are better craftsmen then any of their cousins. Neither of the previous sorts of goblin-kin are good at making anything, effective maybe but not really good as a general rule; hobgoblins however have actual smiths, carpenters, and masons to make their goods and evaluate captured goods so their equipment tends to be of a higher quality and their homes are more than repurposed caves, captured dwellings, cobbled together hovels. While orcs and goblins will raid a village, take everything that they can carry and then burn and despoil the rest; hobgoblins will raid carefully so as not to destroy a good source of future goods or to actually take over a village and give them a permanent settlement and a large number of slaves to use and sell.
Ogres are an odd mutation of sorts that happens with goblin-kin sometimes. Periodically a whelp is born that's bigger than the rest of it's siblings and hungrier. It looks odd compared to it's kin and is box-of-rocks dumb to boot. Usually ostracized and tortured while grow that stops once the rest of it's tribe realizes that it hasn't stopped growing and comes to the conclusion of what it is. Ogres stand 8-10 feet tall, have distended jaws fill with rows of teeth that never stop coming in and are constantly hungry. They are usually found singly in tribes of other kinds of goblin-kin and how they live varies according to what kind of clan they were born into. With orcs and goblins they get treated about the same as any other member of the tribe, just with some added respect for their size and strength. In a hobgoblin tribe they get trained to be living weapons and equipped with the best armor they can afford to make in it's size, usually maille, and serve as the point of a vanguard or the chieftain's bodyguard.
[I'll be posting racial templates for each of these in the coming days along with actual stat blocks for examples.]Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-27421191040611065342016-12-15T12:41:00.001-05:002016-12-15T12:41:22.741-05:00GURPS Island in the Sea of Time [Wall Spaghetti 1]One of my favorite authors is SM Stirling, he writes really good alternate history/pseudo-historical fantasy books. His currently longest running series is a post apocalyptic series called the "Emberverse" by fans due to the first book being titled Dies the Fire and the world the characters live in being the "embers" of ours. The first trilogy was a fairly hard post-apocalypse story where the end happened because some ASBs (alien space bats) have stopped electricity and high pressure gasses from functioning properly. It's a good series and if this sounds intriguing at all you should go look it up, the audio book is rather well done also if that's more your speed. (I want to run an After the End game based on this premise at some point but that's not really the topic of this post.)
At any rate Dies the Fire starts in 1998, which confused a few critics since he didn't write and publish it until 2004. The reason though is that it's connected to another series of his that he did write in 1998 that started with Island in the Sea of Time. The premise of this trilogy is that the island of Nantucket, along with the nearby Coast Guard cutter Eagle and her crew are all transported to the Bronze Age around 1250 BCE. They got to keep all their cool tech toys though they were limited to what could be produced on the island.
The game I think I want to run functions off of the same premise with a few changes. While in Stirling's book series everything was very hard from a sci-fi point of view, after the initial transportation of course, I want to fold in a bit more fantasy. The biggest change is going to be making the magic of the Bronze Age peoples an actual, practical thing which is it isn't in my source material. I think this'll help even things out a bit between the arriving time travelers and the Bronze Age folks, since one of the biggest conflicts in the books was between the Nantucketers and a wayward Coast Guard lieutenant that decided to carve out his own kingdom from the "savages" of the era he found himself in. While it made for entertaining reading and I'm sure it would make for an interesting game having the technologically advanced Americans and the populous and magically active Bronze Agers be on more of an equal footing at least to start sounds good to me.
One of the biggest decisions to make for the game is whether I'm going to make everyone play one of the displaced modern folks doing a "survey" or some such of the Bronze Age world either on a ship or based out of one of the forts that gets set up in lands that Nantucket has claimed or allied itself with; or if I'm going to start the players off as folks from one of a selection of Bronze Age kingdoms and tribes reacting to the arrival of these new "Eagle People" (as the Nantucketers get called by a number of groups in the books) and the upheaval it brings. I think I'm leaning more towards the first idea and letting new PCs come from groups that the PCs have made friendly contact with.
Some other quick notes since I want to actually post this and not let it join my stack of half written posts languishing with an italic "draft" notice next to it in my Blogger dashboard-
Everyone's human and though people from different countries might have suggestions for skills, advantages and disadvantages due to culture and such none of it is going to be mandatory
The 1250s BCE are mature Bronze Age which means overall most places are going to TL1 I believe. The Nantucketers are from 1998 so they'll start at TL8, though lack of manufacturing and infrastructure drops them down to a weird TL5-6 in the books. Then the areas with trade to Nantucketer bases or Nantucket itself will end up being a weird schizo-tech level somewhere in between those levels. I'll probably use the tech and scrounging rules from After the End to help cover my ass about that stuff.
I think I'm going to use Ritual Path Magic with some distinct traditions for the magic. Ritual Adept is either going to be completely unavailable or only something you can get through long and arduous study along with some kind of quest. It'll be so rare as to be completely non-existant. If I do go with Nantucketers PCs to start with if anyone wants to be a mage I'll make them choose a tradition as well as buying up the appropriate Cultural Familiarity and Language up to Native. Even after that I don't think I'll let them start with more then one quarter to one third of their points sunk into magic, Nantucket's big thing is going to be their higher tech level.
Spirits and monsters will exist as well though they're super rare in Nantucket controlled areas. I think mana levels are going to go down in heavily technological areas. So it won't matter in a battle say, or if a magus is trying to show those upstart Eagle People a thing or two in his king's court but if tries to go to Nantucket to cast spells it'll be much more difficult.
I know that probably won't be news to the, like, 3 people that actually read my blog but still I figured I should post about it since I'm dropping $250 on it to get to the "I Want It All" Pledge level and I figure if I even convince one other person to put in for it it's that much closer to getting into the stretch goals. Every little bit helps, right?
(I think I put that embed in right, it's been awhile since I've worried about how HTML interacts with things...)
As of this writing it looks like they're almost to $85k too! That's a few grand higher than it was when I checked yesterday about this time so I'm actually hopeful that they'll get into stretch goals, especially with that last day push that usually happens.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-90673573097384468352016-05-06T11:37:00.000-04:002016-05-06T11:37:27.486-04:00Available Races/SpeciesQuick post before I have to get ready for work. These are the template write-ups for the various and sundry races that my players picked from when they were making their characters. I ended up with something of an oddball crew but one of the great things about GURPS is that they'll end up dealing with it in a more concrete way then if this were a D&D game.
I finally settled on running my first GURPS game in the Forgotten Realms pre-Time of Troubles. I'm not sure that I'll include the ToT in my game because even though the setting I'm most familiar with is the 3rd edition version and thus post-ToT I like the more sword and sorcery vibe I'm getting from reading the old 1st edition Realms lore.
As for the actual game it got a fair start two weeks ago. We all met up and three of the four players started making characters, my wife held off because she'd just gotten done with an 8 hour work day on what was supposed to be a day off so she was fairly burnt out. She did come up with a concept though and since then we've worked out some of the traits she'll have. Everyone else is mostly done, they just need to buy equipment which depends on me getting it ready for presentation.
Oh right, the presentation. Did I explain this before? I'm going through and copy-pasting all the relevant rules into various documents to then be reformatted and printed off for my players. I've been assured by people on the forums that this isn't illegal as long as I don't disseminate the final document in any way beyond letting my players use it for game. Which I'm not and I honestly hadn't even thought to do. Though when I get it into a final format I may get a hard bound copy from Lulu or something since SJ Games seems to be alright with getting copies of the books done up that way for personal use as well.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. Did I mention I'm compiling, editing and formatting information from almost a dozen GURPS books into one set of documents for my players? It's a project that's already taken more than a month of mornings before work and periodically a hour or two afterwards before I crash. I'm through most of the stuff needed to make characters, though I'm only just finishing the F's for the skill descriptions and I haven't even gotten to equipment or magic yet. I think I'm just going to print a copy of the GURPS magic book for my players to use and copy things out of, it'll be quicker and easier than my reformatting everything and since I can already remove entire chapters (Technology college of magic anyone?) it shouldn't be too bad to print. Equipment's going to be killer though.
Alrighty, back to it and I promise I'll have actual content again soon since we should actually be playing game in a week or two.
I'm just going to list all the resources I'm going to be using to build my hexcrawl game split up between a few categories.
Campaign Guide:
This is going to be where most of the player facing stuff comes from though obviously I'll be making some of it and I'll probably pull more from other places. Also unless I call it out this stuff is all going to be GURPS books.
Basic Set: Duh, it's hard to play a game without the core rules.
Martial Arts: Cherry picking from here mostly. Maneuvers, martial arts, some weapon and campaign options.
Martial Arts- Technical Grappling: I'm going to try and use a pared down and simplified version of these rules. I don't want to do everything exactly by the book but I've always hated the binary way grappling works in RPGs and from reading Dungeon Fantastic, and Gaming Ballistic (among other examples) it looks like this will work well.
Martial Arts- Yrth Fighting Styles: The plan is to use this mostly for worked examples of martial arts for things other then humans. Though using it to give examples for martial arts adapted to fighting things other then humans as well (or against magic using opponents) will be useful as well.
Thaumatology: For lots of rules but primarily because mages are going to use Threshold Magic and druids are going to use the alternate schools for their magic labeled as "Tree Magic" or whatever it's called.
Thaumatology- Magical Styles: I really like the idea of magical styles and schools being a thing like martial arts are in GURPS. I'm hoping that it'll even lead to in game rivalry that the players will act on.
Low Tech: The rules for weapons, armor, and various sundry goods are going to take precedence over those in the Basic Set and in Dungeon Fantasy for the most part due to the desire for an increase in verisimilitude in the game.
Low Tech Companions: A lot of this stuff will be useful to me to work out player facing information but I'm not sure how much they'll be used by my players.
Powers: I've been told often enough that it's the third part of the Basic Set that I'll probably end up using it, if only as a reference document when my players or I want something random and off the wall.
Powers- Divine Favor: How I'm going to be running most of the the priestly and clericy types in my game.
Most of the Dungeon Fantasy series: I was going to list them all out but it would be quicker to list the ones I won't be using and I'm not even sure which ones those will be. I'm obviously not really going to be using the templates in them but I am going to use the play guidelines for a bunch of stuff because while my game will be more flexible then the beer'n'pretzels style that Dungeon Fantasy espouses it will still follow many of the same tropes. *
Fantasy: For obvious reasons though not as much as I'd thought.
Various and sundry Pyramids: Mostly individual articles like "It's a Trap" & "Mystic Power-Ups" from 3/60, "It's a Threat!" from 3/77 *
World Building and Hexcrawl Planning:
This is mostly behind the scenes stuff that I'm going to be the only really aware of for the most part. This is going to be much more widely varied then the stuff from the Campaign Guide so I'll list the complete title and links if available for everything.
Welsh Piper's series on building a hexcrawl is very in depth and while I won't follow it exactly I will definitely be using it as a guideline.
I know Troll Smyth has a hexcrawl guide in his blog somewhere as well though I can't find it to give a direct link to it at the moment. It's unfinished and following it exactly won't mesh with the kind of crawl I plan on running but there are good ideas in the series and elsewhere in the blog for all that he isn't a GURPS GM and I think he might be vaguely bemused at inspiring someone's GURPS game. (Then again I could be completely off base with that evaluation.)
Bat in the Attic for me is the grandaddy of the "How to..." guides for sandbox and hexcrawl gaming online if only because it's the first one I really remember reading so I think Mr Conley's ideas have influenced me more then others. He does run GURPS as well (I think his Majestic Wilderlands were designed with it in mind at least to some degree) so I may end up shooting him questions too at some point. Hopefully that'll be okay, not weird and out of left field.
The West Marches at ars ludi are a big influence on my game as well. While I'm not going to detail this game with such a fine focus as Mr Robbins did making things a bit more in depth than the 0-2 things per 6 mile hex has definitely given me something to think about. Other ideas like the consideration of having different encounter tables per area and changing them up as the players do things are having influence on my game. I may run a game with closer fidelity to the West Marches but I don't think it'll be this one.
The rules found in the world building chapters of the Adventurer, Conqueror, King System from Autarch's fine game are also going to be used extensively. Especially to get some semblance of commerce going in my world. This game has actually come close to being played in ACKS on a number of occasions both because my players already grok D&D and just because this is one of my favorite iterations of it.
*While writing this I decided that I'm going to make posts regarding what bits from Pyramid and the Dungeon Fantasy series I'll be using with my game. It'll be good for me and it'll provide more info for anyone else that happens to stumble across this.
I discussed the pros and cons of going for templates versus free build for my characters and I think I've figured out what I'm going to do. I actually settled on this awhile ago but between work and getting sick, and then taking care of my sick wife, I didn't think to actually write this down here.
I'm going to go with free build for the most part. I think it'll really highlight the differences between GURPS and other games we've played. Which has been mostly various flavors of D&D though most recently was the IKRPG. It'll also free my time up to actually putting stuff for the game down on paper and make it so I don't have to spend time making a couple dozen 25-50 point lenses for characters which was the other things I was thinking of doing. While that means my players will end up asking me more questions about how to build things it also works out that I'll end up knowing more about the PCs since I'll be helping build them all as well.
This isn't to say there won't be any templates at all. The non-human races available are all going to be represented with templates and I think I'll make some basic templates as examples for the spell casters just because those subsystems can be complicated and I don't want one of my players to make a wizard and find out later that he forgot to buy Thaumatology or something. Also I'm going to make up some "prestige class" templates for use when and if the PCs join up with a secret society or cult or something. Though those will be strictly optional and will probably be more useful as examples of members of those groups then anything else.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-61898963581253226542015-11-21T16:04:00.002-05:002015-11-21T16:04:59.360-05:00Templates vs. Free BuildLike I said in my last post I'm in the middle of writing a setting book for my gaming group to play GURPS from. I'm going to be including all the basic stuff (attributes, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, etc) though in a much shorter format than is actually in the Basic Set and the other books I decide to take stuff from. This is partially because I only own one set of the books and I'm not going to make my players buy a game that they aren't sure about, and partially because the last time I tried to run GURPS I set the stack of books down and no matter how much I said "Don't worry, we aren't using much from any of these for actual play," they couldn't get over just how many books are available. So I figure if I can link them a pdf or word document with bare bones write ups and page references to the actual books they may be able to swallow it a bit better.
This leads me to my first conundrum though. Whether I should provide them all with templates from Dungeon Fantasy and make them stick to those templates, or if I should have the players do free build their characters with my help. Both have pros and cons though, and I'm going to list them out for my own benefit at least.
Templates
Pros:
Easier character building
More independence when building characters
Niche protection
Easier identification of character types; frex: "Oh you're a wizard and I'm a thief, we need a healer and a fighter then..."
Cons:
DF doesn't allow for much in the way of social skills, advantages, or disadvantages and since I want an almost completely open sandbox that may cause some issues
Power level might be too high for the kind of game I want to run and using the low point total
Could induce not just niche protection but the idea that you have to stay inside your role 100%, which isn't what I want. (One of the reasons I want to run with GURPS is I want my mage's player to decide it's bullshit that he can't use a sword and spend the points to learn how, or the fighter to do the same thing but the other way around.)
Allowing for non human PCs is trickier. Not impossible though, obviously.
Free Build
Pros:
More freedom in character building
Gives me a bit more room to define the power level as far as how many points I give the players to use
"Cross classing" will almost definitely be a thing, who doesn't want to be a good fighter that casts spells, can sneak, and track, etc.
Allowing for non human PCs is much easier.
Easier to introduce social skills, advantages, and disadvantages; they're there from the beginning!
Cons:
No "class" templates means more hand holding on my part and more likely that my players (all new to GURPS) will build underpowered or "useless" characters. It also means much more time spent making the characters as everyone reads over all the skills, advantages, and disadvantages and agonizes over their decisions.
The almost certainty of "cross class" characters might also mean that PCs end up stepping on each other's toes a lot.
They may also end up with a fairly glaring hole in their capabilities, hopefully I'll be able to spot it before play started but there's no guarantee
So there we go. I'd like to run a good game for these guys and one of the biggest things I want out of GURPS (and why I want to run with this system instead of ACKS like I'd originally planned) is I want the flexibility and openness of the system and I'm afraid I won't get that if I run straight Dungeon Fantasy despite the fact that that would probably be the easiest option. Especially since all my players are brand new to the system. I'll have to think on this more and discuss it with my group a bit.
Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-4082761592371687782015-11-11T15:05:00.000-05:002015-11-11T15:05:14.383-05:00A Quick VisitSo I'm back after too many months for me to like thinking about. While this post won't be terribly long I'll try to give a quick update on the various goings on since my last post as far as it relates to my gaming. Basically everything can be boiled down to "not enough". My group hasn't been meeting regularly basically since my last post, we haven't even actually managed to have a game since September and I can't remember the last time we managed to get two games run on two consecutive weeks. The rapidly approaching holidays aren't promoting any hope in me that we'll manage to get together more than twice more this year either. Which isn't the end of the world but it does make me somewhat desperate to game. Unfortunately because I work 2nd shift it's hard to even join an online game since the majority of people are free evenings when I'm working.
Anyway, other updates: I've done a bit of work on all but the Traveller game out of the projects I listed in my last post. The World of Darkness game and the GURPS hexcrawl are getting the most attention though because in theory I'm going to be running them sometime in the near future. Currently I'm working on an outline for a GURPS "game book" for the hexcrawl, putting together a list of templates, allowed advantages and disadvantages, skills, and equipment for the world is proving to be interesting. In theory it'll help me get a better handle on the system and it will make building characters easier for my group since none of them have played GURPS before.
Hopefully I'll get together some more content heavy posts soon rather than these one off "Here's a quick update of my gaming life" things that I've been doing. Maybe I should start up one of those gaming blog writing challenge things to get me in the swing of writing...Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-47844679092916704872015-05-10T03:06:00.000-04:002015-05-11T14:22:40.916-04:00Quickly, Before I Pass OutQuick post before I pass out since it's almost 3am, I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night and I've been up since 7am or so. Basically this is just an update to declare my intentions of returning to this and hopefully make a better go of it. It's also going to be very stream of consciousness so it might not make a whole lot of coherent sense.
One of my players (temporarily my GM) is running an IKRPG game for the group. When we started out we had a large Protectorate of Menoth paladin, a dwarven arcane mechanic and his "pet" Warjack, and an inquisitive sharpshooter from a merc company full of pirates. Because I thought of something a bit more in-line with the game premise I switched from my pseudo-Arabic paladin to a commando working for Cygnar's intelligence organization. The guy playing the dwarf switch to an ogrun (think civilized orc/ogre that hails from dwarven lands) because I jokingly told him his character had heroically sacrificed himself in battle to save the lives of myself and the other PC. He thought I was serious and erased his character sheet and started making his ogrun ironhead.
Of course now that we're starting to get in the swing of things the guy running the game switched positions at the school we work at and he's now working weekends. Hopefully this won't interfere with game too much. As it stands though game's on indefinite hiatus until he gets used to his new schedule and figures out if and when he's going to be working past five on Saturdays since that's our optimal start time.
On the plus side a friend of ours messaged me saying he had more free time so he could start gaming again. This unfortunately is because him and his wife are splitting up however so I'm very conflicted about how happy to be about this news. I really need to actually take the time to grab lunch with him at some point.
I'm now planning on using this blog (I know, I've said that before) to help me plan out games I want to run. When and if I ever get to run them who knows but at least I'll have something down in case. So, really quick without any real explanation:
RuneQuest 6 translation of 2nd edition era Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with some influences pulled from 1st WFRP and early editions of the wargame
GURPS Fantasy hexcrawl set in my own home brew setting
further defining my "Ithaca by Night" setting thing for new World of Darkness (That's Ithaca New York not Ithaca Greece. Sorry all you Grecophiles out there. Also does anyone call it the "new" World of Darkness anymore except people that played in "old/classic" World of Darkness?)
translate Forgotten Realms to ACKS, with most of the work going into custom divine casters and other classes though defining either the Sea of Fallen Stars or The Sword Coast with the economic rules in ACKS sounds interesting.
Mapping out a few sectors for Mongoose Traveller.
Further defining the collaborative map my gaming group made for a Burning Wheel game a few years back.
There I think that's all of it. I'm supposed to be planning something for some out of town friends for when they're here at some point. Only problem is I don't know when "at some point" is so it's hard to build up the drive to start planning. I'm thinking I might print off the D&D 5e starter rules and run the two people left in my group through something basic though to fill up time while our GM settles into his schedule.
Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-2177380757459921172015-01-12T13:24:00.000-05:002015-05-10T02:40:42.629-04:00I'm Back?I know it's been awhile and to be honest part of why is the inertia of just not posting. I'm not sure if other people have this problem but the longer I go without a post on a blog, the harder it is for me to start back up again. I need to try to post at least once a week though I'd like to get it up to twice or three times.
Anyway, I'm writing this because I've started a new game. Well technically since the Numenera game I think this'll make the second or third. What's exciting about this is that I'm not running. Which in and of itself is something amazing. I've been running for this group (and I define the group kinda loosly) off and on since high school without anyone else running anything. I've played a couple times during this period (I was involved in a multi-year Vampire: the Masquerade elders game over Skype for example) but only with other groups. So this is very nice. [fake edit- I just went back and looked at my previous posts, turns out I ran a Warhammer Fantasy game using RuneQuest 6...honestly I completely forgot about it. I guess it was successful. :-P]
Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-71236439501802006142014-05-06T12:50:00.001-04:002014-05-08T13:06:12.726-04:00Death and RebirthSo, after two months and not nearly as many games as you'd think we've switched systems and worlds away from Numenera. Happened mostly because we didn't play for more than a month and during that time I started doing a ridiculous amount of overtime at work which killed my momentum and inspiration for the game. Honestly it was hard for my to build up inspiration for the setting as well. I felt like I was constantly struggling to make things weird enough for the Ninth World setting and yet keep it familiar enough for play to still happen. The other wall I ran into conceptually was the fact that it was an explicit rule set out in the core book and in a couple of the head designer's blogs was the fact that you weren't supposed to connect it to the modern world at all. I know it's my game and I can just change what I want to but having it said explicitly made me struggle with it. Silly I know but there you go. Anyway, on to the new game.
Now, as of about two weeks ago, I'm running a sandbox Warhammer Fantasy game. The catch is that we're using Runequest 6 for the game. So far we've had two games, one was character creation and the second was finishing up characters and starting the first adventure. I'm starting them off with the adventure in the core WFRP 2e book because of the group two of my players are pretty much completely unfamiliar with it and the other two are only passingly familiar with it. Both of them are fairly conversant in 40k though so I'm hoping it'll translate over to some degree.
Everyone's characters are complete as it stands, though one of my players went out of town for a couple games so I need to finalize things with him. The characters are currently:
Orzad, a dwarven machinist and engineer obsessed with clockwork and automata. He was "suggested" to join the army to help deal with the Chaos incursion that became known as the Storm of Chaos as a battle engineer. Is a good shot with his rifle and is near constantly fiddling with it and other bits of machinery. Technically a member of the dwarven gentry he's lost much of his influence since his departure. Still one of the richest and best equipped members of the party.
Hannah, a high born priestess of Shallya. Doesn't quite get the whole adventuring thing and is still carrying some baggage from her birth in terms of how she expects people to act and react to her. A passable combatant and the second best off member of the party what she really offers is the social graces and the miracles of Shallya she can call upon. Is currently on a pilgrimage to learn humility and got caught up helping refugees from the Storm.
Torendil, an elven commoner and apprentice magus. Is currently a student of Aqushy, or the Bright Wind of magic, the use of which is used to burn things mostly in a variety of fun and interesting ways. Has little to nothing in the way interpersonal skills and is about as arrogant as it's possible for an elf to get. In fact even other asur have taken offense to his attitude and it was his teacher who sent him on a mission to "prove his mastery of magic" in the human dominated Empire which he took up with great relish to show the humans a thing or two. Hopefully his magic is enough to keep him alive because his skill at arms is very poor.
The last character still needs to be fleshed out some, he doesn't even have a name currently. All I really know is that he's a former slave who killed his master and is now travelling to seek his honorable death as a dwarven slayer.
And now I have to head off to work, I'll pick this back up later (maybe tonight but probably tomorrow). At the point I'll go into how I've been having them make their characters and go a little into what subsystems we're using from Runequest and what I'm porting over from Warhammer.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-783625855768817062014-03-04T15:25:00.000-05:002014-03-10T11:47:19.736-04:00Boss Fight[Quick write-up so it's here, I might expand on it later.]
We had the second game a few days ago. We began with them breaking camp and returning to the road after a brief discussion on if they should do that or circumvent it and cut through the woods to the Pit. They decided that they'd already slaughtered a dozen or so margr (one with a hunting horn) so they figured if they hadn't been attacked in their sleep they'd be fine for now. As they entered the woods Wemm and Mag spotted a couple of scouts. When they did Mag started shouting at them and they ran much to the chagrin of the others. When they knew they'd been spotted they ran off, presumably to warn the rest.
The group was then ambushed at the edge of the woods by a group of four margr, two regular hunters and a pair of mutants. They dealt with theses quickly, though one of the mutants had 4 mental armor so when Xavier hit it with a mental Onslaught it just shrugged it off and stabbed Wemm which made them pause for a minute. The noise of combat also drew the attention of the chieftain and his remaining lieutenant (both mutants as well) and the five remaining warriors at their encampment. As they were discussing what to do next a volley of 8 inch long, barbed quills flew by Vash's head. Which a yelp from him and a bellow from the chieftain combat ensued. Charging at the group were the margr chief (a brute standing head and shoulders above the rest of it's kin, so about 9' tall, covered in heavy armor and bristling with the above mentioned quills), his lieutenant (who was covered in armadillo plates instead of fur), and the five normal warriors. In a turn of events I hadn't forseen Mag threw a cypher which randomly rearranged the molecules of whatever it caught within it's blast radius. The chief and lieutenant were too fast but the five normals were alternately liquefied, vitrified, turned inside out, turned into a pile of maggots and I think there was just physically shredded as well; all randomly and not all at once. After this, decidedly not pretty, turn of events the two mutants attacked. Wemm was forced to pick up a staff (actually a spear he broke the head off of), his first weapon of the game even! It was a little desperate for a minute but they managed to kill those as well.
In the aftermath of the fight Vash, with the help of Mag and Xavier, dissected the chieftain to find a cypher had grown inside it's brain. Presumably a side effect of whatever had caused it to mutate the cypher could be taken as a pill to increase intelligence.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-52368951917132116582014-03-01T11:52:00.001-05:002014-03-04T12:10:36.219-05:00Margr Pit Tribe
Game's tomorrow night and I figured I should get some more game planning out of the way. I decided earlier in the week that the margr tribe that the group has been hunting down has been mutated by an artifact they discovered at some previous point. The tribe's leader and his three lieutenants have gotten mutations from the tables in the core book from this.
The tribe has set up their camp a respectful distance from the Pit's western entrance/path. In the camp are a grouping of tents, enough for about 40 margr, and some slave pens holding 18 people. Most of them are a traveling merchant caravan one of the tribe's raiding parties ambushed a week back, killing all 10 of the guards in the attack. Since then another 5 of their number have been butchered for meals along with all of the group's aneen. Five of the living captives are a group of prospectors that the tribe captured coming out of the Pit. They're kept in a slightly better pen (there's a roof for example) and are given a slightly higher quality of gruel. This is because they've managed to pass themselves off as priests from the Pit and showed the margr chieftain how to operate the artifact/show reverence to the god of the Pit. The merchants offer the PCs 250 shins (but will go up to 500, all they have assuming the group raids the chieftain's tent) for an escort back to town. The prospectors will give the group half their haul of cyphers (up to 3/4) for the same thing.
If the group goes back they'll be created by the headman, the clave's high priest and an Angucan knight. All are greatful to see the group return to town and the knight offers to take news of their actions back to the baron and the deacon.
Honestly I figured I'd just be copying from the corebook in Numenera but I actually had to come up with a decent amount of content. I still need to come up with the answers to the last two questions as well but it's getting on towards work so I'll have to think of them later.]
So there's a series of questions on an OSR blog, Jeff's Gameblog, wrote up a series of questions designed to help define the immediate play area for a sandbox game. The first part of this entry is so I can answer these questions, I'll be handing out the answers to my players.
What is the deal with my cleric's religion? You're probably an Amber Priest, a member of the Order of Truth. They're centered in the kingdom of Navarene and are led by the Amber Pope. Their primary tenants are the furthering of civilization through the study of the past worlds and the technology they left behind. While not truly a religion they have found that the people of the Steadfast are more willing to receive their teachings if they cover it religious trappings, even going so far as to establish days of reverence and rituals in the last couple of generations to reinforce this viewpoint. Recently the current Amber Pope, Durranet VI, has called for a crusade against the Gaians of the north who worship various machine intelligences and natural phenomenon as spirits and gods. There is a splinter faction of Amber Priests who view the solidification of the Order of Truth as a religious organization a dangerous straying from their true path and have forsook the Order and the Amber Pope though they keep the title of Amber Priest. These anti-papists have seperated themselves from the Order and tend to keep to themselves.
Where can we go to buy standard equipment? Most villages will have basic supplies that you can purchase (food, normal clothing, even some very basic weapons and armor) though to get access to the full equipment list you'll have to head to one of the larger towns. To really try to purchase and not just find things like cyphers or artifacts you'll have to go to a major city. I'll be putting out a larger equipment list soon, it'll be from either 2nd edition D&D or Warhammer so there'll be a lack of weird stuff but it'll work for the "normal" stuff.
Where can we go to get platemail custom fitted for this monster I just befriended? Best chance for custom work like that is to head to Stirthal and inquire at the markets there though Thriest is closer and the markets are expansive as well.
Who is the mightiest wizard in the land? The matter of the most powerful nano is a some debate. There are two main competitors for the title in Malevich are Saduka the Red who dwells in a shapestone tower near an inactive floating relic at the eastern end of the Voil Chasm. Very secretive, Saduka keeps to himself though strange lights and noises seen from a distance at the relic have convinced the locals that he is consorting with spirits or possibly even demons. The other is Quanon, a being that dwells within the Chasm under Stirthal. Though he may have been human at some point in the past now he can only tenuously hold that distinction having enhanced himself with so many biomechanical parts as to barely even be humanoid any longer.
Who is the greatest warrior in the land? Polele the Bandit King is the greatest warrior in Malevich, a veteran of the wars common in the kingdom before Yorvic's father managed to solidify his claims to the kingdom.
Who is the richest person in the land? Though King Yorvic (and thus his regent, Ellabon) arguably own everything within the kingdom and is thus the richest person in the land
Where can we go to get some magical healing? Though almost any local clave will have a trained chirurgeon magical healing is not common. Despite this healing elixers from Guran and Qi can be bought in most major towns and all large cities. There are also rumors that Saduka the Red can heal the wounded and it's a well known fact that the Aulifex can do the same at his tower in Kordech.
Where can we go to get cures for the following conditions: poison, disease, curses, death? Poison and disease can be healed by most trained chirurgeons. Curses are harder to remove from their targets though the monestary outside of Neverlost can do so and it's said that the Aulifex and Quanon can do so, for a price. Bringing back the dead however is just not possible, but of course there are rumors of it happening.
Is there a magic guild my MU belongs to or that I can join in order to get more spells? The Order of Truth is the most widespread organization with these kinds of resources. There are a number of nanos who are part of the Order, this combined with their mission has given them a wide knowledge base on esoteries and numenera. The Sarracenians are another group though they are specifically concerned with the study and worship of plants and plant like creatures. Many find this odd though it has given them a unique insight into natural processes and many of their members are accomplished healers. Additionally the Gaians, though opposed by the Order of Truth, have a unique perspective on esoteries and numenera that can give them access to knowledge otherwise forgotten or overlooked by others.
Where can I find an alchemist, sage or other expert NPC? Quanon is a well known expert in the previous aeons and the numenera that they left behind along with being able to repair and recharge almost anything. He'll gladly sell his services for shins though it doesn't come cheap, he is much more willing to trade for numenera. Counselor Rashik, the overseer of Thriest, is also a well known man of learning. He's currently putting most of his effort into turning Thriest into a center of learning and his own knowledge is broad.
Where can I hire mercenaries? Mercenaries are actually very common in Malevich because of the near constant state of warfare that was common in the kingdom until recently. Most towns have a few mercs hanging around looking for work. If you need more then that getting in touch with Polele would be the best bet as he has access to a large pool of former soldiers at his disposal.
Is there any place on the map where swords are illegal, magic is outlawed or any other notable hassles from Johnny Law? Most places allow travelers to wear weapons when passing through villages and town even if only grudgingly, recognizing that the wilderness outside civilization is rarely safe or easy to travel through. Even the major cities in Malevich allow individuals to carry most weapons though they usually require peace bonding of some kind.
Which way to the nearest tavern? Caluec has a small roadhouse since it serves as something of a travel hub for the area. Marqash has a both a tavern and an inn for serve the travelers and soldiers stationed there. Omm lacks a tavern though it does have a roadhouse that serves as one for locals and travelers that're doing more than just passing through. Nulb has a sizable tavern as well. The major cities all have various taverns, inns, bars and roadhouses befitting their nature as major hubs of travel and commerce.
What monsters are terrorizing the countryside sufficiently that if I kill them I will become famous? Margr are always a problem and many nobles have bounties set on their heads though killing a few won't really earn you any significant recognition. Getting a name for yourself as an abhuman killer would require a truly amazing number of them to be slain by your hand.
Are there any wars brewing I could go fight? The recently declared crusade on the Gaians in the north is looking for new soldiers and accomplished warriors like the PCs might stand to make a name for themselves in they so wished. Also there are always tensions and border skirmishes brewing along the borders in Malevich, the barons vieing for control over more land and better territory.
How about gladiatorial arenas complete with hard-won glory and fabulous cash prizes? Yep those are around but the closest one is going to be in Stirthal, Thriest, Neverlost or even father to another city; the smaller towns that're more local can't support that kind of thing.
Are there any secret societies with sinister agendas I could join and/or fight? Indeed there are, the Convergance is the big one. They're a somewhat dark mirror of the Order of Truth, searching out numenera and the secrets of the past in order to directly benefit themselves and hopefully rule the world one day. The other is the Jagged Dream, a loosely organized group that wants to plunge the entire Ninth World into war and flames.
What is there to eat around here? Most of the villages herd kescke, large ruminants with long shaggy fur and a curling plate-like horn growing from their forehead, for their meat, fur and milk. One of the most common crops grown is manoic or manoic root which is used for everything from brewing alcohol to being dried and used as a thickener in soups stews and other foods. The dried flour is also used in the production of bread, cakes and noodles. A few kinds of gourds are also grown. In trade cities a wider variety of fruits,vegetables and meats are available.
Any legendary lost treasures I could be looking for? Yup, I'll let you know when I think of them...
Where is the nearest dragon or other monster with Type H treasure? See the previous answer.
The first is a write up of each of the kingdoms in the Steadfast. It's a good basic write-up, about a paragraph for each one. Doesn't give a lot of information on each of the kingdoms but it is a good basic overview.
Kingdoms of the Steadfast
The next is a rules overview, like the write up of the kingdoms it doesn't go very in depth though I do feel like it's the stronger of the two articles. Honestly I think you could run the game just with this, you wouldn't be able to make any characters but all the rules for actual game play seem to be here.
Numenera Rules Overview
There we go, next update will probably be soon. Just more setting building.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-39640266750248759952014-02-26T00:37:00.000-05:002014-02-26T00:37:24.725-05:00First GameRan my first game of Numenera Saturday night. It went well for the most part. The only real problem was the fact that so many nat 1's were rolled. It seriously threw off the difficulty and dangerousness of the fight. Anyway, let me start at the beginning.
I have four players:
Xavier Van Ark, a Mystical Nano who Works Miracles,
Wemm Lee, a Charming Jack who Wields Two Weapons at Once (actually doesn't, but anyway),
Mageneus, an Intelligent Jack who Talks to Machines, and
Vash, a Learned Nano who Rides the Lighting.
All the characters looked finished so I had everyone roll on the "Random Power Origins" table and give me a few things about their background.
Xavier rolled "Natural Mutation" for the origin of his miraculous powers of healing, because of them he joined a monastery outside of Neverlost as an acolyte. He began wandering when he met Wemm in Neverlost, he is accompanied by his friend Vash whom he met studying at the monastery. He is also currently searching for an artifact or oddity that he can gift to the Order of Truth to join as a full member.
Wemm rolled "Abduction by a Machine Intelligence that Experimented on You", this machine intelligence downloaded an extensive knowledge of martial arts into his brain and altered him in such a way as to make him a natural leader. Though before this he was peasant in the City of Bridges he is now wandering the Steadfast (and possibly into the Beyond) looking to start his own fighting order using unarmed combat instead of the heavy arms and armor so commonly used. He has started training Mag in his fighting style, though she's only picked up the very basics.
Mageneus (Mag for short) is a bit of a special case as the player really wanted to play a clone created by aliens (extraterrestrials). So when she rolled "Followed by a Cloud of Nanites" as the origin of her power we decided that her creators, in addition to leaving out some basic human interaction protocols and instilling in her a drive to build (or repair perhaps?) a starship, implanted her with a device that attracts the local nanites. This also explains how she uses her floating skill, it being something that she picks up from the datasphere via he friendly nanite cloud. She is part of the group by dint of luck, when she was dropped back onto the world she was greviously wounded but was happened upon by Xavier who used his powers to heal her. She now views him as a messianic figure who must be brought back to her creators in her starship, though he doesn't know that...
Vash is arguably the most mysterious of the bunch, having to roll twice on the origin table he got "Unexpected Viral Reconstruction of your Body" and "Implant or Mutation that that Provides Knowledge from the Datasphere", to combine them we decided that the viral reconstruction changed him in such a way as to plug his brain into the datasphere. This new connection drove him to the monastery from the Cloudcrystal Skyfields to learn with the monks there where he met Xavier and they became close friends.
Our intrepid band of adventurers were headed somewhere, we didn't specify where, when came upon a small farming village. Xavier immediately went to the clave to speak with the local head priest. Wemm went to speak with the village headman. Vash headed to the tavern to secure lodgings and food. Mag went into a small general store to look at wares and see if they could restock some supplies. When Mag walked into the store, she slapped her hand down on the terminal the store owner was using and it promptly exploded/caught on fire. (This was the first 1 rolled of the night.) The shop keeper pulled out a crossbow and was marching Mag out of his shop when Wemm came down with the headman to see what the hell was going on. Wemm talked the guy down, Vash and Mag fixed his terminal and Xavier helped organize the bucket brigade to keep the rest of the town from burning down. When everything was under control Wemm found out about some missing prospectors and sightings of margr near a set of ruins called "The Pit" locally. They headed out to look for the prospectors and try to drive out the margr.
While walking to towards the Pit, a 3 day journey, the party was ambushed by a hunting party of margr. It went very well both in and out of game. Combat actions were decided on quickly, turns went fast and smooth. The whole thing went very well. Vash's player did roll a nat 1 for his initiative roll, leading him over a nearby hill and away from the rest of the party but into another three margr. He killed one with a cypher of injectable explosive and other party members killed the other two but not before I used a GM Intrusion (XP went to Vash and Wemm) to give one of the margr a hunting horn which it used to signal others nearby.
The hunting horn led them into another ambush which went much for them. Together they rolled no less then ten nat 1s in this fight which really put them on the bad end of the fight and stretched my ability to come up with GM Intrusions that would make the fight interesting and challenging and not just a death trap. It worked out in the end though this fight took about an hour versus the ten minutes or so the first fight took. Vash also used both his other cyphers (something that took him slightly out of phase and a crystal that dilated time around him, both items boosted his defense). The plus side is none of the margr ran or sounded horns so their hoping that the rest of the tribe won't notice they've slaughted about a third of it before they can find their den and scare them off...or something. Currently the group has camped out in the lee of a hill about an hour's hobble/walk from the path and though everyone else is fully healed Xavier really got the crap beaten out of him (he got debilitated, ie- two of his pools reduced to zero) and he's still injured somewhat. Despite how poorly this fight went they're hopeful about how the rest of the trip will go, banking on not rolling up so many free GM Intrusions next game.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7412110672586941339.post-52471154187036691342014-02-21T19:48:00.002-05:002014-02-21T19:49:58.838-05:00Reading the Rules, Part II'm currently reading through the rules, which is good since my game starts tomorrow. So far so good, though some of the first stuff they talk about seems to be where they hid the normal "This is how you play an rpg" bullshit that I thought they'd done without. So far the only rpg book that just assumes that if you just blew $60 or more on a game book you may just know what an rpg actually is has been RuneQuest 6. Oh well. Once you get to the actual rules is when it gets good.
Everything (and I do mean everything- the guy trying to shank you for your last copper, trying to jump from rooftop to rooftop, even debating philosophy with an antediluvian machine intelligence) has a difficulty level from 1 to 10. Various things like training, equipment and special powers can adjust the difficulty, usually by 1 at a time. If the difficulty is reduced to less than 1 it's considered a routine task and doesn't need to be rolled for, if not then the resulting number is multiplied by 3 and that is the number rolled against. Something to note is that the players roll everything. The DM doesn't roll anything at all, just assigns difficulty levels to things and adjudicates if and how the level is modified. So far so good.
So it appears that some rolls have special effects. a 17-20 are all beneficial with a 19 giving you a "Minor Effect" and 20 netting you a "Major Effect". Rolling a 1 gives a free "GM Intrusion", which apparently lets me manipulate the story. I'm not sure how I feel about this to be honest since manipulating the story and setting are what I'm supposed to be doing as the GM. I'll have to think about this more. [Edit: It appears that the GM Intrusions are specifically supposed to be altering the game in a meta-gamey, pseudo-adversarial way. I'm more okay with them now.] A description of Major & Minor Effects and the kinds of things you can do with them. Apparently if the player wants to do something very unlikely then I can call for a roll to confirm the effect.Nostrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00768178696239135304noreply@blogger.com0
